Insight Enterprise v9.7 Release


Ultimate only expected rate tables have been added for the core Studies allowing for a more natural rate input format consistent with industry tables.  Users now can load fully select rates, select & ultimate rates or ultimate only rates.  The ultimate tables allow loading and storing of less records leading to improved performance during expected rates cube processing.


The new “Claim Survival” application allows cohorts of claims and its survival rate over time to be studied from claim opened to closed date.  Survival curves are calculated for a defined range of opened dates and study dates and any defined claim closed reason at the month, quarter, and year levels.  Confidence intervals are calculated using Greenwood’s formula.


The interface has been enhanced with the addition of an “Expected Rates” tab to show all tables available for Policy Termination, Claim Incidence, and Claim Termination studies.  An editable grid allows UsedFlag/ReloadFlag to be reset through the dialogue box.  A process button allows processing of Expected rates measure groups based on changes in the Rate table parameters.  A new File load package “iwImportExpectedRates” will load expected rate tables into the Source from flat files.

Dynamic Views

The expected rates cube processing was enhanced to dynamically create views during process time to only include the rate components required.  A number of optimizations were added to exclude the data not required during the calculation process.  A query hint table was added to allow specification of join types.


The exposure calculation have been updated such that exposures are now defined exactly to the end of the policy year for the study termination reason and to the date of exit for all other termination.  This change removes the approximation used previously and will provide more robust handling of expected results when there are non-uniform distribution of events.  This exact exposure approach has been made for all of the core Insight Studies. 


Nineteen additional user defined Group attributes were added to the Group Policy dimension.  These attributes provides the latest values with every load.

Policy Survival Application

For predictive analysis, an introduction of a new “Policy Survival” application to study cohorts of policy contracts and its survival rate over time from the policy issued date to termination date.  Survival curves are calculated for a defined range of issue and study dates and any defined policy termination reason at the month, quarter, and year levels.  Confidence intervals are calculated using Greenwood’s formula.

IDEC Rates

The Insight Enterprise can now accommodate the new disability income IDEC 2013 rates which include a much broader range of risk variables as well as a 5 year monthly rate period.  The risk variables have been extended from the CIDA structure of gender, occupation class, waiting period and claim cause to additionally include contract and market type, smoker, benefit period group, COLA status and diagnosis severity.

Load Controller

This menu-driven interface has been additionally enhanced.  A “Source Status” tab was added to allow dynamical audits of the Source database tables providing date ranges and record count details.  The “job execution” tab now monitors job progress at the more detailed SSIS package level.  For multi-instances, the “active” instance is identified through the introduction of an iwMaster database.  Multi-level security groups for users have also been added.

Job Steps/Package re-structure

The revised job steps/package structure allows for greater flexibility to enable or disable the cube processing and other processes.  This is achieved by redefining the LoadType parameter values of the primary and secondary loads and adding the system table dbo.SSISPackagesForLoadType to define the job level in addition to the dbo.SSISPackages table.

System Status Audit Job

An audit job has been introduced to capture useful information of the server and database environment status.  The audit job can be executed after a data load process to capture load and table statistical details useful to debug load issues and to analyze the volume of data loaded into the DW and cubes. 

System Audits

The system audits functions have been revised and extended.  Fact record count measures added to allow reconciliation of cube results with the DW in the data flow audits.  Integrity audits now identify records to be dropped or loaded into the DW, and if loaded, how it will be handled in the system.  Table Type attribute has been added to allow better filtering of audit reports.  For ease of presentation, the source audit cube has been split into two separate cubes, by volume and by integrity audits.  In the data blow audits, version audits have been extended to identify new and terminated records, versions and non-status change versions.



Insight Enterprise v9.3 Release

Modular System

The Enterprise system has been re-designed with modular data warehouse architecture.  The modules represent areas of business analytics (e.g. Policy Studies, Incurred Claim analysis, Earnings analysis, Agents, etc…).  The Enterprise system can be implemented as a whole or as a modular system with only certain modules.

Load Controller

A new front end tool for users to manage data loads has been introduced.  This menu-driven interface enables a user to view load status, change load configuration settings, execute and monitor jobs, and view job history logs including error reporting.

Dynamic Customization

The look and feel of the user cube interface and reports can now be customized to business requirements with ease using our customized PowerShell scripts designed for SSAS OLAP objects.  This process allows hiding and renaming of cube pivot objects of dimensions, attributes, measures and measures groups.   Translations of objects of up to 3 languages are available.

Incurred Claim Development

For Property/Casualty, Group and Health insurance analysis, a new application to calculate IBNR runoff with the Chain-Ladder Method for loss reserving.  Run-off triangles are dynamically selected with date range and triangle size.  A number of calculations are available including claim payments, accumulated, and outstanding claims and loss development factors.

Experience Study Benchmark

For the Experience Studies, the introduction of Pool dimensions to benchmark groups with certain common policy attributes is made available.  Comparative analysis such as A/E ratios between the benchmark set against its sub-population can now be performed seamlessly in the cube reporting layer.

Expected Rates Functionality

The expected rates functionality for all studies has been redesigned to give users flexibility and control for defining and managing rate tables.  

  • Product groupings allow users to defined set of rates for different types of products and can be redefined dynamically over time.  
  • Risk classes can be specified for any number of variables, not just the industry standard variables such as gender, smoker, occupation class or waiting period.  
  • Claim rate tables can be specified using monthly or annual rates or both with monthly for an initial number of years and annually thereafter to accommodate new industry standard tables.

Expected rate tables can be easily added, changed or removed with minimum of processing required.

Reload Jobs

Separate fact and process reload jobs have been added to take advantage of flexible split load re-design of v91.

Studies calculation precision

For all studies, the expected input rates are extended to 8 decimal places (dp) with intermediate calculation at float(double precision) and final amounts rounded to 10 dp.

ManagerID hierarchy

In the Agent dimension, the ManagerID hierarchies are now based on AgentPersonIDs instead of AgentIDs which were strictly PolAdmSystem specific.

Claim Termination study exposures

In the Claim Termination study, exposures will now be generated from Claim snapshots even if the associated policy snapshot is missing.

Renaming of Termination Reason hierarchies

The Termination and Closed reason object hierarchies/attribute have been renamed to include “Status” to clarify its “Status” role within the policy, coverage, claim and claim state objects.

Removal of Claim dimension

In the Claim Incidence and Claim Incidence Rptd studies, the Claim dimension, which relates to only to ‘Actuals’ are now hidden to avoid possible confusion with the corresponding Coverage attributes.  It is still available in the main cube for audit purposes if needed.

Decommission of Expected rates expansion process

The Expected rate compact tables and processes have been removed.



John McGarry named President and CEO

Insight Decision Solutions Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of John McGarry as President and CEO effective immediately.  John replaces Kevin Pledge who has stepped down from his CEO position and is leaving the company to pursue other interests.

John McGarry co-founded Insight Decision Solutions and has been President for the past 13 years.  He is also the chief architect of the Insight Enterprise system and has been instrumental in the design and development of the experience study and earnings-by-source methodologies used in the Insight system.
