Insight Enterprise v10.0 Release

SSAS Tabular Cubes

This release migrates from the previous SSAS Multi-Dimension (MD) to the new Tabular cubes.  This required a structural re-design of the MD calculations and cubes into the SSAS Tabular structure allowing for more dynamical calculations (i.e. expected rates) at time of queries rather than pre-processing of results during cube processing.  The new Tabular design is structured around a single cube called “Model” with perspectives built around this cube as business applications.  This single cube combines all eleven of the previous MD cubes into only one.  The object-based application hierarchy has been re-aligned within the Tabular cube structure.  There are now twenty-one business applications streamlined from the previous sixty-one MD applications.  The Agent transaction and movement applications have been de-commissioned.  The standard naming convention of the Tabular cube will be “iw<VN>IdsTabCube” (i.e. iw100idsTabCube for this release).

Experience Studies

The Expected rates calculations are now coded in the Tabular database in DAX language instead of in SQL in the relationship DW database and in MD calculations.  Across all Studies, both the initial and central rate exposure methods are now available at the same time, on either an annual or monthly rate basis.  Previously in MD, the two methods were not simultaneously available in the same instance and required a custom release of the chosen method.  All measure names have been revamped and standardized in order to ensure uniqueness of each name, a requirement of the single cube structure.  Certain measures no longer needed have been de-commissioned (i.e. third central moment and skewness) including variance which is calculated directly in the standard deviation.  The lowest level of the Policy Term Reason dimension (Pol Term Reason) has been removed resulting in a two-level hierarchy of Pol Term Reason Line and Pol Term Reason Group.  Both actual and expected events are applied to the lower level Pol Term Reason Group.  The lowest level of the Claim Closed Reason dimension (Closed Reason Dtl) has been removed resulting in a two-level hierarchy of Claim Closed Reason Group and Claim Closed Reason Name.  Both actual and expected events are applied to the lower level Claim Closed Reason Name.

For the Policy Termination study, additional changes include:

  • Substandard rates no longer applied by Policy/CoverageID. The ratings are to be directly applied to the expected rates using separate study groups.
  • Joint life functionality is available for 2 lives only and the joint lives must now be in the same Study Group. Joint lives 3, 4, and 5 have been removed.
  • Date Factors tables used for expected rate improvements must now be specified at the calendar year level (i.e. set DateMthFromKey = YYYY01 and DateMthToKey = YYYY12).
  • For the Annual central rate (ACR) method, the Date Factors are now applied directly to the annual initial rates. Previously, they were applied to the monthly central rate as an approximation.

Performance and Design

SQL Server 2016 Platform

This release with prefix “v10.0” was developed on the SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Edition with SP2 and on SSAS Tabular mode.  For SSAS Tabular, the server specification requirements are very different from SSAS Multi-dimensional and clients who are upgrading should re-evaluate their hardware needs.

Project Deployment Model

For SSIS projects, the SSIS packages has been migrated to the “Project deployment model” from the previous “Package deployment model”.

The release package folder now stores just one file “iwPckg.ispac” that contains all packages.  This is deployed to a single Integration Service Catalog on an instance of SQL server.

The SSIS project uses Project Parameters to specify package properties including server and database names.  With this change, the Insight iwMaster database is no longer needed and has been de-commissioned.

ULTIMATE RATE TABLES

Ultimate only expected rate tables have been added for the core Studies allowing for a more natural rate input format consistent with industry tables.  Users now can load fully select rates, select & ultimate rates or ultimate only rates.  The ultimate tables allow loading and storing of less records leading to improved performance during expected rates cube processing.

Policy Survival Application

For predictive analysis, an introduction of a new “Policy Survival” application to study cohorts of policy contracts and its survival rate over time from the policy issued date to termination date.  Survival curves are calculated for a defined range of issue and study dates and any defined policy termination reason at the month, quarter, and year levels.  Confidence intervals are calculated using Greenwood’s formula.

Insight Enterprise v9.3 Release

Modular System

The Enterprise system has been re-designed with modular data warehouse architecture.  The modules represent areas of business analytics (e.g. Policy Studies, Incurred Claim analysis, Earnings analysis, Agents, etc…).  The Enterprise system can be implemented as a whole or as a modular system with only certain modules.

Load Controller

A new front end tool for users to manage data loads has been introduced.  This menu-driven interface enables a user to view load status, change load configuration settings, execute and monitor jobs, and view job history logs including error reporting.

Reload Jobs

Separate fact and process reload jobs have been added to take advantage of flexible split load re-design of v91.

Studies calculation precision

For all studies, the expected input rates are extended to 8 decimal places (dp) with intermediate calculation at float(double precision) and final amounts rounded to 10 dp.

Insight Enterprise v9.1 Release

Split Load

“Split load” functionality has been introduced to allow individual Policy Admin Systems and its associated data to be loaded independently for different load periods (backcast and incremental). PolAdmSystems can also be deleted independently (allowing for reloads if required).

This required a fundamental redesign of the core dimensional model and processes, introducing the new load control dimension PolAdmSystem and PolAdmSystemID onto all related fact tables.

The load processes have been fundamentally split into the unit dimension and fact loads. However, current loads will continue to be bundled in the standard processes: Admin, Reserve&Alloc, GL, Projection, ExpectedRates.

Earnings by Source

The Earnings by Source functionality has been re-designed to allow more flexible and transparent analysis of the sources and projections across the main policy data of contracts, reserves, funds, and earnings.

With the change 6 new applications have been added and 4 applications removed.  The new applications are:

  • Policy Gains
  • Policy Movement projection
  • Fund Movement projection
  • Reserve Movement projection
  • Policy Income projection

Insight Enterprise v8.8 Release

New Functionality

Claim Utilization Study

A new Claim Utilization application is introduced allowing analysis of claims paid as a proportion of the guaranteed benefit amount. This study is embedded within the Claim Termination exposure and is fully integrated and consistent with the Claim Termination study.

Paid Utilization Rate is Paid Month/Benefit Month or the monthly paid claims exposure as a proportion of the monthly contract exposure.

Aggregate claim payments for a period are defined in the source table srcClaimPymts using the ServiceFromDate and GrossClaimPaid with adjustment to benefit months made by apportioning either by month or number of days.

Insight Enterprise v8.7 Release

Release 8.7 (re)introduces claim transition studies. These are used for long term care analysis allowing claims to be analyzed by by claim cause, duration since loss date and duration since start of the claim state. This is fully integrated with the claim termination study.

This release also incorporates substandard ratings in the policy termination study expresses as factors or flat extras, and adds the Policy Year study method to the claim termination analysis.

New Functionality

Claim Transition Study

A new Claim Transition application is available allowing state-transition studies using the latest claim and claim state records.  It is fully integrated and consistent with the Claim Termination study.
